Presentation Night 2025: Celebrating a Season of Success

Pontefract Squash & Leisure Club held its annual Presentation Night on Friday 13th July – a fantastic evening celebrating the club’s achievements throughout the 2024/25 season.

Hosted by James Willstrop and Mick Todd, the event recognised the hard work, dedication, and accomplishments of both individuals and teams across all levels of the club. The evening was a true celebration of what has been a standout season.

Club Achievements

It’s been a year to remember for Pontefract’s Yorkshire League teams. Yorkshire League 1 were crowned Premier League champions, while Yorkshire League 2 bounced back after last season’s relegation, winning Division 1 and earning promotion straight back to the top tier.

Pontefract also shone on the national stage, with three club members shortlisted for honours at the England Squash Awards in December. Rising stars Theo Hobman and Sienna Hampshaw were recognised in the 'Young Rising Star' category, with Sienna taking home the award. Meanwhile, Jayne Robinson was awarded Coach of the Year, a fantastic recognition of her dedication and impact.

Acknowledging Excellence

During the evening, James Willstrop extended heartfelt thanks to those who support the club behind the scenes and on the court. He highlighted the outstanding work being done not just with elite players and juniors, but also within schools and in the club’s mixed ability squash sessions, which run twice weekly and provide inclusive opportunities for adults with learning disabilities.

With coaching led by James Willstrop and Vanessa Atkinson, the club continues to develop players of all abilities and backgrounds, and this inclusive ethos was at the heart of the evening.

2024/25 Award Winners

🏆 Club Person of the Year – Howard White

A tireless contributor to the club, Howard was recognised for the daily hard work he puts in behind the scenes.

🏆 Team of the Year – Yorkshire League 2

After the disappointment of relegation last season, the second team showed remarkable resilience to bounce back as champions of Division 1. Matt Godson, Men's Club Captain, presented the trophy and extended thanks to all players, especially Danny Siddall, Chester Dochery, and Adam Taylor.

🏆 Male Player of the Year – Sam Todd

After a challenging 12 months due to injury, Sam made an astonishing leap in the PSA rankings, climbing from outside the top 900 to world number 68. He also received his PSA Challenger Player of the Year award on the night, acknowledging his impact on the international stage and his contribution to the club’s Premier League success.

🏆 Most Improved Male Player – Chester Dochery

Chester has shown outstanding progress and has become a key player in the Yorkshire League 1 side.

🏆 Female Player of the Year – Lauren Grey

A talented junior representing Scotland, Lauren has worked hard throughout the season and was crowned Club Champion earlier in the year.

🏆 Most Improved Player – Jacquie Butterworth

A regular attendee at training sessions, Jacquie has demonstrated excellent improvement and commitment to her game.

🏆 Most Improved Junior Girl – Sienna Hampshaw

A season of triumph for Sienna, who became the English U13 Champion, won the Pontefract Junior Gold U15 event, and represented England in France. Her England Squash Rising Star Award caps off a phenomenal year.

🏆 Junior Girl Player of the Year – Fearne Copley

Fearne continues to excel, recently winning the Pontefract Junior Gold U17 and showing huge potential for the future.

🏆 Most Improved Junior Boy – Theo Hobman

Theo’s progress over the past year has been exceptional, earning him a shortlist place for England Squash Rising Star.

🏆 Junior Boy Player of the Year – James Swindon

Although James couldn’t attend on the night, his season has been nothing short of exceptional. He claimed the English U11 Championship in March and recently finished third in the Dutch Junior Open in Amsterdam.
